Movie Review: 47 Ronin

Last Friday, Gino and I decided to watch a movie at Suria, KLCC. Initially we wanted to watch Frozen because we both have not seen the movie yet. Anyways, sadly, Frozen was not showing at Suria anymore and so we opted to watch an English movie. The options we had were The Hobbit, Tale of the Dinosaurs and 47 Ronin. We decided that we watch 47 Ronin instead of the Hobbit because we haven't seen the first hobbit movie.

The movie revolves around Kai (Keannu Reeves). They call him a half creature because he is not of pure Japanese origin. He was adopted by a Land Lord and growing up he served the land lord together with the other samurai. He is not a Samurai though. Anyways, gist of the story, there were 47 Ronins who wanted to seek revenge for the untimely death of their lord. They succeeded in seeking revenge but the king sentenced them to harakiri themselves because it was not right to seek revenge.

My Review: Comparing it to Samurai X the movie, this one is a bad adaptation of Japanese culture. For some reason I find it very "Hollywood" with the cinematics and the story. I feel that it lacks the essence of the simplicity of how Japanese are. Even with the costumes, it was very grand and elaborate. They said that the movie was based on real facts about the 47 Ronins who committed suicide but the movie version already twisted the story because they mixed it with the love story of Kai and Mika. I felt that the movie relied much on CG effects that's why I felt it was un-organic. The war scene was also nothing to look forward to. I'll give this movie a 2 out of 5.
